Casper Mtn Racers Move To RMD

Posted in Uncategorized on June 5th, 2009 by csmitty58

Well it became offical this week that CMR is now officially a member of the Rocky Mtn Division. What this means is less time on the road, less time out of school, a better training schedule and racing in the Rockies! I will send out reminders; however ,when it comes time to renew your USSA memberships CHECK the Rocky Mountain box.

This is a positive move for the club. smitty

Reading for Parents

Posted in Uncategorized on April 13th, 2009 by csmitty58

This article is in the new Ski Racing; and I found this a switch as I am usually the one texting athletes saying “Hey did you read such & such in the latest issue”?   Well today I received a text from an athlete asking if I had read the latest article on page 32; I had not. My athlete wanted to know if they should show it to their parents…yes; I think every parent should read it. so here it for those who don’t receive Ski Racing. smitty

Spring & Summer Ski Camps

Posted in Uncategorized on April 9th, 2009 by csmitty58

CMR Spring & Summer ski camps at Beartooth Pass (http://www.rlissc.com/index.html ).

My thought is since the pass is only 4 hours away we could offer different dates in June and July; depending on response what the level of athletes allowed to go will be. The first camps will only be for the YSL & J3A’s, ages 9-19; and again depending on response whether I will run them together or two separate groups and coaches.

Think it over the camp dates are on the calendar on the web site.

Glenn Bochmann, one of the original CMR coaches gave me this old photo yesterday.

It was May of 1973 and Hogadon had been closed for a month.  On Mother’s Day weekend there was a huge snowstorm and we re-opened the ski area for our own spring ski camp the next weekend.

This pictures shows from left to right – Bob Spickard, ski instructor and area manager at the time, my brother John, Chuck Bromley and myself.

At the end of the day we hiked to the west of Hogadon and skied all the way down to Garden Creek Road , we ended up just west of where Munday’s house is now.

Anne and I have been talking about that ski weekend from May 1973 until now, so I suppose we will be talking about the powder snow from this weekend for the next 30 or 40 years.

Park City FIS Update 3

Posted in Uncategorized on March 26th, 2009 by csmitty58

Sunday: Today brought 47 degree temps in the am… not a good sign for a day of slalom, sub zero would be nice but ya work with what you have. The men ran first and the course was a burner from a field of 123, 54 made the second run…the rest of the day was similar for the women and air temps dropped 30 degrees to late to help the snow surface.

However our Casper racers put in some good runs under the conditions and looks like Derek will now have some FIS  slalom points to add. Joel and Martha did what had to be done survive along with the rest of their field. I’m sure Mart,Joel and Derek will take the new race conditions in Park City and file them under experience and will ski much better the next time they encounter them. All in all it was a good weekend and our CMR athletes and the other Northern division athletes braved the conditions and made new friends in Park City

Check the Pics page for Park City Fun!

Saturday: today brilliant sunshine and soft snow made tough racing, the first run for the men was a burner; with the men braking through the crust leaving a 6-8 inch shelf next to the gate so rut riding was the name of the game. Derek M along with 26…ouch other racers failed to finish this scorcher. The second run found more rhythm and slower speeds, however the brilliant sunshine created caverns for the athletes who ran after the flip 30, unforchuntly for Joel the caverns ate him and 24 others…

For the Ladies; Northern Divisions Tara Hinds placed 26 in the first run making the flip, however hooking and going out at the 15th gate. CMR Martha B. put 2 good runs in and bibbed up 40 places for the day, nice job.

Tomorrow will be our last day here in Park City and we are hoping for colder temps tonight making better racing…

Friday: today the men ran their first run of GS and grooming and clear night skies along with sunshine brought better moods and racing. Martha B.  got it down the hill twice bibbing up 20 places. Joel S also getting it down while Derek M fell victim to the giant ruts…tough day.

Thursday: Today’s GS on CB’s run here in Park City was one of the most Challenging courses I have seem in my years of coaching. After an 1 1/2 hours of slipping the track…(I should mention it snowed 12 inches last night ) the women’s race was underway. After 15 racers completed the course rumblings from coaches on course started emanating over the radios and after 10 more women coaches started pulling athletes.

Then the announcement  ‘men’s race was canceled’….bummer; as Derek and Joel spent the afternoon in the Jupiter Bowl in thigh deep powder…The Northern division girls stuck with it and I mean tufted it out and put it down the mountain; however the leading point girls packed it in before the second run. This left  no chance of our girls scoring any FIS points so we decided to let the girls decide who wanted to brave the second run. After some emotional decision making only three girls from the division decided to go for it; two completed the course, good job too them !

Friday, the schedule will to get the men a race ;so the men will run first two runs; then if conditions permit the women will go.

That’s all I got.

Hey everyone,

Our race season is coming fastly coming to an end…this week I take Martha Brown, Joel Simonson and Derek Munday aka Hermann…what ever to Park City UT for a FIS Devo. This is a 4 day race GSx2 and SLx2; good luck to them.

This weekend is also the seasons race finale for the CMR Casper City Challenge!!! If you have not raced then you should get out and get up there . The conditions should be fantastic with this weeks snow storm and everyone should take advantage of  what maybe the last really great weekend to ski!

Also you will want to see the grand prizes in the overall classes; the belt buckles are SWEET!! as Matt Deane puts it; and he is in the hunt for one.

So come on! get out and race, ski or just socialize ;show CMR and the City of Casper your support for a great place to PLAY!
